Explore an industrial heritage landscape, investigate 300 years of explosive history, develop geographical skills and create an artistic map of the site.

Topic Description

This exciting new addition to the Royal Gunpowder Mills Schools Programme offers students the chance to explore our fascinating site, expand their historical understanding of the landscape and develop their geographical skills through the use of maps.

Students will analyse a range of historical and contemporary maps alongside photographic and written sources from our archive. The trip will also include a chance to explore our Main Exhibition.

A hands-on activity will introduce students to experimental and creative approaches to cartography. ‘Mapping the Mills’ school visits are designed to enrich students' navigation, interpretation and artistic skills.

On Site Visits run from 10:30AM – 2:00PM (arrival time 10:00AM – 2:30PM departure time).

Timings can be altered to suit your groups' requirements.

Geography

Use the eight points of a compass. Interpret Ordnance Survey maps in the classroom and the field, including using grid references and scale, topographical and other thematic mapping, and aerial and satellite photographs. Understand how geographical processes interacts to create distinctive landscapes that change over time.

History

Understand how different types of historical sources are used rigorously to make historical claims and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past. Understanding the connections between local, regional, national and international history; between cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history; and between short- and long-term timescales.

Art

Produce creative work, exploring ideas and recording experiences. To use a range of techniques to record observations.
