How to get here

We are sorry, but due to the Coronavirus situation we are not currently open to the public or taking school bookings. We thank you for your understanding in these difficult times and we wish all our customers well.

We look forward to welcoming our visitors back in February 2021 for our exciting new season of activities and events.

In the meantime, keep an eye on our website for news and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

We are open to the public only when we stage events. Go to What’s On to find your opportunity to explore the Royal Gunpowder Mills. You can also find entrance prices and how to book there too! 

We open up the site for pre-arranged group visits of 20+ and provided tailored tours. This is a superb way of experiencing the Royal Gunpowder Mills in more depth.

You can also arrange to bring your own event here, hire space, run courses and workshops, or stage your celebratory occasion.

Getting here:

Our address is: The Royal Gunpowder Mills, Beaulieu Drive, Waltham Abbey, Essex, EN9 1JY

Located between Waltham Abbey & Waltham Cross, off Highbridge St. (across from McDonalds).

Entrance at top north end of Beaulieu Drive.

The site is a 10 minute walk west from Waltham Abbey Town Centre.

By Road:

From J25 of M25 go to Waltham Cross and then A121 to Waltham Abbey; or from J26 of M25, take A121, taking care to get into the right-hand lane when approaching the traffic junction at Meridian Way, and continue straight ahead into Beaulieu Drive.

By Underground:

From Loughton station (central line) - Bus 66 towards Debden. 

By Bus:

The site is around a 10 minute walk from Waltham Abbey Town Centre.

Nearest bus stop is Highbridge Street Roundabout which is served by the following local buses:

251, 66 , 86 and 13

By Cab:

Cab prices vary depending upon traffic and operator but tend to be £4 - £6 from Waltham Cross station.

By Rail:

Nearest station is Waltham Cross, connecting London Liverpool Street, Stratford or Tottenham Hale underground (Victoria Line) to/from Cheshunt/Broxbourne/ Hertford East.

Connection can also be made at Theobalds Grove (London Overground) via Hackney Downs or Seven Sisters and then to Highbridge Street via 251 bus. 

We are a 25 minute walk east from Waltham Cross station. You can take a bus from outside the station. Turn right out of the station, go under the road bridge, up the stairs, turn left and you will see the bus stop just ahead.

You may also take a bus or a cab.

By Foot 

The Royal Gunpowder Mills is situated within Lea Valley at Section 1 of 6 - Details of how to get here from Lee Valley can be found by clicking here.

Note: There may be loud bangs at some of our events.

Note: Activities are subject to change, please check event listing before attending.  

Note: Mad Lab Science Shows are offered on a first come, first serve basis - Doors may close earlier than advertised is room has filled. Prior warnings will be made if Lab is busier than usual  

Note: Children must be accompanied by an Adult or Guardian at all times.

Dogs: Only guide and assistance dogs will be allowed on the site. They must remain in harness during the visit.
