From air raid shelters to rationing, explore how life at home changed during the Second World War.

Topic Description

Through an exciting and interactive performance students will meet Leslie Gaunt, employee at the Royal Gunpowder Mills and volunteer Air Raid Warden.

Discover why air raid shelters were needed, how rationing worked and what happened at the Royal Gunpowder Mills in wartime Britain. Students will explore why the Royal Gunpowder Mills was a site of local, regional, national and international significance. This session encourages students to reflect and draw comparisons with life today.

Brought to you in partnership with Spectrum Drama, a UK leader in historic and contemporary drama for museums and schools. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
